A Nigerian student, Jaiyeola Abiola, based in Hull, England, has been jailed for planning, and carrying out a sham Registry wedding. He was jailed along with his sham bride, Vania Pinheiro-Fernandes, a Portuguese EU citizen. Abiola was to pay Fernandes the sum of £5,000, with £2,500 already paid in advance. They were caught by the UK Border Agency, who had secretly recorded the wedding. It was gathered that Abiola had only a few days left for his student visa to expire. He is a 29-year old Hull University Masters Degree student, and was desperate to remain in the UK.
