Buhari orders probe of arms procurement for military since 2007/

.

President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the National Security Adviser, NSA, Maj.-Gen. Babagana Monguno (rtd.) to immediately constitute an investigative committee that would look into the procurement of hardware and ammunitions in the Armed Forces from 2007 till now.
According to a statement issued on Monday by presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, the investigative committee was mandated by the President to identify irregularities and make recommendations for streamlining the procurement process in the Armed Forces.
The statement noted that the NSA has consequently constituted the investigative committee with AVM J.O.N. Ode as President while R/Adm J.A. Aikhomu (rtd.), R/Adm E. Ogbor (rtd.),    Brig Gen L. Adekagun (rtd.),  Brig Gen M. Aminun-Kano (rtd.),    Brig Gen N. Rimtip (rtd.) and Cdre T.D. Ikoli  are members.
Other members of the committee, which has Brig Gen Y.I. Shalangwa as Secretary, include: Air Cdre U. Mohammed (rtd.), Air Cdre I. Shafi'I, Col A.A. Ariyibi and Gp Capt C.A. Oriaku (rtd.).
The establishment of the investigative committee is in keeping with the President's determination to root out corruption and irregularities in the nation's public service.
It came against the backdrop of the myriad of challenges that the Nigerian Armed Forces have faced in the course of ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the Northeast, including the apparent deficit in military platforms with its attendant negative effects of troops' morale.
“The committee will specifically investigate allegations of non-adherence to correct equipment procurement procedures and the exclusion of relevant logistics branches from arms procurement under past administrations, which, very often resulted in the acquisition of sub-standard and unserviceable equipment,” the statement noted.
