Why We Arrested Blogger Abu Sidiq — EFCC
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has confirmed that it arrested a blogger, Abubakar Sidiq Usman, saying it is in connection with alleged "cyberstalking".
A statement by EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, on Monday said Abu was picked from his home in Kubwa area of Abuja on Monday morning and was currently being quizzed by anti-graft agents.
The EFCC claimed that some of Abu's activities contradicted sections of the Cyber Crime Act, but that he had been granted administrative bail and would be released once he provides sureties.
The statement was silent on the specific sections of the Cyber Crime Act Abu allegedly breached.
The arrest of Abu had sparked condemnation from Nigerians on social media, with “FreeAbusidiq” hashtag trending on Twitter.
Abu is the third blogger to be arrested under the Cyber Crime Act, signed by Goodluck Jonathan in 2011. Bloggers Seun Oloketuyi and Emmanuel Ojo were arrested in 2015 for similar claims.
