After several months of public debate, Governor Fashola of Lagos State finally signs Cremation Bill. He says it is voluntary, and that 'it shows how the concept of globalization has taken roots in the State'. He lauded members of the State House of Assembly for 'responding to global yearnings', and that it shows that cremation is the best way to go.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Justice & Attorney General, Mr. Ade Ipaye, said the Law now makes it legal for the State Government to cremate unclaimed corpses in its mortuaries after a specified period of time. He went further to say that if the owners of the corpses also fail to show up to collect the ashes after 14days notice, it will be disposed by the State Government, subject to the consent and approval of the Commissioner for Health.
- Hmmm...Interesting adulteration of culture, and values of a people!!! Is this the 'Indianization' of Lagos?
- I bet you some States will vehemently abhor this practice. I'm having goose pimples already.
- I wonder how many Nigerians would 'voluntarily' opt for Cremation??? The thought of it is scary. Anyway dead body no dey feel pain, and dust to dust is somewhat similar to ashes to ashes..abi?.
- As for me...abeg give me the good old 6feet anyday. It seems a more dignifying way to reach heaven...dat is!!!
Strange idea for Nigeria. In addition,14 days seems short considering that there is no proper record keeping of information by centralized state departments
