The UK-based Nigerian oil tycoon, Michael Prest, yesterday lost his divorce battle against ex-wife, Yasmin, a British citizen. She won a UK Supreme Court Ruling giving her the right to extract £17.5million ($27.4m) from Prest's offshore companies, as part of the divorce settlement. This has been termed an extra-ordinary landmark case by UK lawyers who were surprised to see the Supreme Court judges 'piercing the corporate veil', as it were. The Court ruled that business people can no longer deliberately hide their assets in business and corporate structures to protect them in future, in the event of divorce. They therefore asked Prest to surrender seven properties to Yasmin. Prest had in an earlier case, before the Appeal Court succeeded, where it was said that the properties of his company constituted a separate legal entity, and could not be included in the divorce.
Prest and Yasmin were married in 1993, and lived in the UK before the divorce was flied in 2011. He was not in court yesterday.
